The National Association of Theater Owners released a new set of rules on Monday, Jan. 27, requiring production companies to limit the running time of their respective trailers. The rules themselves are described as “voluntary guidelines” and will go into effect Oct. 1, 2014.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle will be hosting a luncheon for “Go Red Day” on Friday, Feb. 7, from noon-1 p.m.
The event focuses on women and their heart health and will feature motivational speaker Rita Sweatt of Amory, Miss. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.

Looking for a way to get active on campus this semester? The intramural sports office at Stark Recreation Center has the answer. The intramural office is currently looking for participants for its three-on-three basketball tournament. Students can sign up in the intramural office in Stark Recreation Center from Jan. 27 -30 at 5 p.m. Students can find more information on intramural registration on the MUW website.

This year the Ina E. Gordy Honors College’s spring forum series focuses on one of America’s favorite pastimes — sports. The topics will range from personal experiences to research and psychological effects.
The series begins with Thomas Velek, director of the Gordy Honors College, on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.in Parkinson Hall. His presentation is entitled, “Lessons from an Obsession: Athletics and the Life Well Lived.” He will be speaking about his own experiences as a child athlete to an award-winning career as a soccer coach.

Living in Mississippi during the winter months has taught us that no matter how long we live here we’ll never be able to determine the weather from day to day.
Last week, I had to wear fleece-lined leggings under my skinny jeans just to survive the frigid chill during the 30 foot walk from my car to the inside of my work. The next day I was outside running around playing disc golf in a tank dress and ankle boots feeling like I was posing for a Free People ad.

This December has a movie worth watching come out every weekend. It is shaping up to be an expensive month for avid theatre-goers. This list will cover the first two weekends.
The first weekend, Dec. 6, sees the release of two notable films: “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Out of the Furnace.” “Inside Llewyn Davis” is a Coen brothers’ film that follows a singer/songwriter who experiences New York in the 1960s. It has won many awards and is most likely going to be a contender for the Best Picture Oscar.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, some of Santa Claus’ reindeer were running around campus, but you didn’t have to call the North Pole because it was for a good cause.
Erin Dollars, a graduate student assistant, helped develop MUW’s first-ever “Reindeer Run.” The purpose of this event was to help a local church food bank provide food for families who are in need during the holidays.

Alan Moore, writer of beloved graphic novels like Watchmen and V for Vendetta has recently proclaimed his distaste for superhero films such as “The Avengers.”
He told The Guardian:
“I hate superheroes. I think they’re abominations. They don’t mean what they used to mean. They were originally in the hands of writers who would actively expand the imagination of their 9 to 13-year-old audience. That was completely what they were meant to do and they were doing it excellently…I think it’s a rather alarming sign if we’ve got audiences of adults going to see the Avengers movie and delighting in concepts and characters meant to entertain the 12-year-old boys of the 1950s.”
