Mississippi University for Women held Parent and Family Day on Saturday, Sept. 27. It was the first time that the W has ever held such an event on campus, and the plan is to make it an annual occasion.
Parent and Family Day brought students and loved ones together for a day of activities, food and excitement. Happiness seemed to be in abundance as family members began to arrive on the campus at 10 a.m. to check-in for the day’s event.

The Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium was begun in 1989 by a group of humanities professors to honor and inaugurate Dr. Clyda Rent, the school’s first female president, and to honor Eudora Welty.
The symposium is named after one of MUW’s most famous students, Eudora Welty. Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, a professor of English and the director of Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium, explains why the symposium was named after her.

It may be small at only 1,000 watts, but WMUW 88.5 The Edge, MUW’s campus radio station, broadcasts a wide variety of music to the surrounding area, and it gives students a chance to have their own weekly shows.
“Primarily, it’s a learning lab for the Department of Communication, to let students learn what it’s like to be on the air,” said Eric Harlan, the faculty advisor and station manager for WMUW, as well as an instructor in the department.

The Spectator now offers a new way for you to keep up with what’s going on around campus and around Columbus.
“The Weekly Update” is a broadcast-style show being produced by the some of the newspaper’s staff and other communication students. The broadcasts will be available at www.muwspectator.com, on YouTube and through The Spectator’s Twitter account, @MUWspectator.

Action films revolving around the tired veteran getting pulled back into the life they left behind are common and rarely rise above simple entertainment. “The Equalizer” is not a common action film, injecting fresh moments into a tired script.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) and starring Denzel Washington and Martin Csokas, the film keeps the audience captive throughout the proceedings.

Here’s what’s happening around town for the week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 4.
The Seventh Avenue Heritage Festival will be held on Oct. 3-4 on Seventh Avenue and 15th Street N.
This will be a heritage festival with an emphasis on African-American history and music in blues, gospel and R&B Grammy-award winning venues.
The polls are in, and MUW jumps to No. 18 in the rankings for best public Southern regional universities according to U.S. News & World Report. There are several factors that were considered in these rankings. Some of these factors included the Alumni Association, the all-around success of the university and a survey that students and faculty completed
“The increase is due to the growing perception of what our students, staff and faculty accomplish here,” said Dr. Jim Borsig, MUW president. “A heavy component of rankings is based off of what our peers think of the institution, graduation rates and the success in our students.”
Being ranked so highly while also having one of the most affordable tuitions in the Southern region says a lot about MUW and what the institution has to offer.

Every year, MUW sends a small group of students on trips that they will never forget through its study abroad program. Everyone who studies abroad agrees that it is an opportunity that should never be passed up.
This year, the W is sponsoring two study abroad trips. The first will go to Alicante, Spain, which will be available to all interested students.
The Alicante program will leave in May and last four weeks. Students will stay in host homes as they study language courses at the University of Alicante and a cultural course taught by Erinn Holloway, instructor of Spanish and the interim coordinator for the study abroad programs.

When Kris Sullivan tells people where he attends college, he gets some odd looks.
“At first, people are like, huh?” he says.
That’s because Sullivan attends Mississippi University for Women – yes, women.
He’s gotten into the habit of launching into a quick explanation that the university also admits male students to avoid the misconceptions the name causes.
“There are men that go to it. You always have to say ‘and men,’ because of the name,” he explains.
Sullivan isn’t alone in his struggle to describe his college choice.
The university, which began accepting men in 1982 after a U.S. Supreme Court decision forced it to change its women-only policy, has yet to change its name. With men now making up 17 percent of the student body, there is a question in the air. Should the name of the university be changed?
