Midday rain causes flooding on MUW campus

There was a flood on the Mississippi University for Women campus Tuesday, Sept. 2, that left some students temporarily stuck in buildings and vehicles trapped.

Shortly before noon Tuesday a flash thunderstorm created a flood on some parts of the MUW campus that traditionally have problems with water drainage. Students had their vehicles stuck in water that was almost 2 feet deep, and some buildings were surrounded by the rainwater. Danny Patton, chief of campus security, offered advice.

MUW sees enrollment growth in several academic areas

MUW enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year is higher than in recent years, and some degree programs on campus are experiencing an unexpected a surge in their numbers.

 

The 2,697 students enrolled this fall make up the largest student population in more than 10 years. The university saw a 13 percent increase in transfer students, with many of those students coming from community colleges.

The life of a college student can be hectic and stressful, but making time for God makes a difference.

 

MUW offers a variety of religious organizations on campus to encourage students in their walks with Christ. These organizations welcome young people from all backgrounds.

 

The religious organizations currently on campus are the Baptist Student Union, Chi Alpha, Cross Culture, Let the Word Speak, Uquirk and the Wesley Foundation.

MUW students can expect to hear a few candidate pitches this week, as SGA election voting will be available from Tuesday, Sept. 9, until Friday, Sept. 12.

“Let's start this election week off strong, SGA STRONG,” said Sade Meeks, newly elected president for SGA.

Every year SGA holds an election week in which students on campus participate in a week full of heavy campaigning and fun events.

Here’s what’s happening around town for the week of Sept.7-14.


The Tennessee Williams Tribute and Exhibit will start at the Columbus-Lowndes Library on Sept. 5-24 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m at 317 7th Street North.

Recital of contemporary music presented on MUW campus

The National Association of Composers USA (NACUSA) Mid-South Chapter and Mississippi University for Women's Department of Music presented a modern classical music recital on Saturday, Sept. 6, in Poindexter Hall.


The event featured music from seven composers affiliated with various universities, including MUW, Louisiana Tech, University of Montevallo, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Tennessee State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

First of all, I would consider myself a geek. I love all things geeky such as video games, science fiction and most of all: new technology.

I wasn’t into technology until I bought my first iPhone. It was the iPhone 4, and I got it in 2012, which was a full two years after its release. After that, I was hooked. Now I spend several hours a day looking at YouTube channels that specialize in tech. My favorite channel is Marques Brownlee’s channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/marquesbrownlee). He is only 20 years old, but he is extremely knowledgable.
