Student Debt: Collect it in college, keep it forever, or so it seems

College is for most, a memorable experience. Students meet new people, prepare for the future and usually gain 15 to 20 pounds.

However, for most, the Freshman 15 isn’t all that’s being gained.

According to the Huffington Post, college debt is on the rise. The average student in 2012 graduated with a degree and $29, 400 in student debt. This amount has increased in less than a decade, with students in 2004 owing only an average of $18, 750.

It’s not all about the job for some people; it’s about what people get out of their work. Passion is one of the things that MUW alum, Shelley Moss, feels about her job. Moss said she feels connected to MUW in more ways than one. For her, MUW is like home, so being named the Director of Admis­sions was an incredible honor.

Sen. Roger Wicker encourages excellence in education during campus visit

Mississippi University for Women is known for its academic excellence. This is a sentiment the Roger F. Wicker Center for Creative Learning, located on the fourth floor of the education building, strives to accomplish and implement every day.

With an array of programs benefitting the community, it’s no wonder Sen. Roger Wicker, whom the building is named after, along with MUW President Dr. Jim Borsig, visited and praised the accomplishments of the center last week.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle will be hosting a luncheon for “Go Red Day” on Friday, Feb. 7, from noon-1 p.m.

The event focuses on women and their heart health and will feature motivational speaker Rita Sweatt of Amory, Miss. This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.

3 on 3 basketball tournament

Looking for a way to get active on campus this semester? The intramural sports office at Stark Recreation Center has the answer. The intramural office is currently looking for participants for its three-on-three basketball tournament. Students can sign up in the intramural office in Stark Recreation Center from Jan. 27 -30 at 5 p.m. Students can find more information on intramural registration on the MUW website.
