The month of October was declared National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 in order to increase awareness about this topic.
This is a time when national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies join forces to encourage the public’s awareness of breast cancer. These groups also inform the public about the disease and offer easier access for women to receive help.

The month of October brings about thoughts of cooler nights, red leaves and the beginnings of hot chocolate-filled mugs. It’s the first month that the South even thinks about the weather finally chilling down, but what doesn’t first come to people’s minds is the fact that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This month, the MUW campus will be bustling with talented writers who are taking part of the 25th annual Eudora Welty Writers Symposium. The series is a three-day event that recognizes the works of alumna who have found success writing fiction and non-fiction novels. The highlight of the event will be the Welty Gala.

Oktoberfest is a known tradition on the MUW campus that many people look forward to. It is a fun time of the year where students, faculty, alumni and families from around town come to enjoy the fall weather and the festival activities.

Spotlights burned high above the edge of downtown Columbus last Saturday night on Oct. 19. Monsters, childhood creations and hopeless souls from beyond the grave gathered inside The Princess Theater. It was the annual Halloween Dance Party. This year the theme was comic books. And as promised, Team Halloweenz, produced a 24-feet-by-24 feet comic book that towered behind the DJ booth which depicted Captain Halloween’s fight with the Full Moon Fang.

Every October, all major networks play horror film marathons, going through the same classics year after year. When people are asked what horror movies are the best to watch, the usual responses are “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.” More recently, the answers have moved to “Insidious” and “Paranormal Activity.” Here are a few other horror films that are worth watching.

The Princess Theater will hold its annual Halloween dance party Saturday, Oct. 19. This year the theme is comic books, or as their slogan says “Captain Halloween saves the Dance Hall of Justice from the Full Moon Fang.” The dance show will be produced by GTR Productions and will boast a roster of seven DJ’s. I caught up with the creative director and DJ Blaine Garrard a.k.a. Garranimo.

There are quite a few movies of note coming out this week, many of which may be worth seeing.
The first film on the list is “12 Years a Slave.” An ensemble cast stars in this historical drama, including Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Salt”), Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Benedict Cumberbatch.
