The Student Government Association is finishing up this semester with events that will recognize students and their achievements at MUW.

First, the SGA, along with Student Life, will be hosting the second-annual Achievement Gala. It will take place on Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m.

Multiple awards will be presented during this ceremony. These awards will be given to graduating seniors and student leaders who excelled in balancing academics and campus participation.

“It’s a mix between academic and social achievement,” said Kimone Holtzman, coordinator of student engagement.

Students, staff and faculty members were asked to nominate the students whom they felt were most deserving for these awards. Those nominated were to be students who did outstanding work, 3.75 GPA (and above), and showed excellence in a myriad of areas.

The Outstanding Leadership Award will be presented to a student who has given dedicated time to increasing excellence throughout the campus. This student will have made an impact by serving on committees, in organization memberships and through academic progress.

A student possessing leadership potential will receive the Horizon Award. This award recognizes the beginning accomplishments of a first-year student during the 2013-2014 year.

The Transition Award will be given to a transfer student who has continued to achieve strong academic grades. This student should also display much dedication and be an influence in The W community.

A graduating senior who showed exemplary leadership, service and scholarship during his or her time at The W will be awarded the Legacy Award.

The True W Student Award is meant to honor the student who has promoted the campus spirit and pride, along with maintaining strong academics. This person will have shown loyalty to The W and proposed a new tradition or creative idea to benefit the campus.

For a student who is a member of any underrepresented population who has promoted diversity, unity, and acceptance by educating other students about their population, the Outstanding Minority Award will be presented.

The Achievement Gala is sure to be a night to remember and recognize students who have excelled at The W.

The SGA will also have a picnic to celebrate all the work that their organization has done during the past school year. Everyone is welcome to come and help the SGA celebrate its accomplishments.

The picnic will be Tuesday, April 29, at 5 p.m. It will be located in the greenspace area behind Kincannon and Jones Halls.
