Rivers Launch Party

On Sept. 10, 2013, the W hosted a launch party and book signing for one of its very own professors, Michael Farris Smith.

It was a come-and-go type of evening event, where students, faculty and the community alike could get their books signed, buy a copy of “Rivers” and enjoy refreshments and music that the W graciously provided for the occasion.

The “Rivers” launch was one of the many cultural events that the W is hosting throughout this semester, and it had an attendance rate that exceeded expectations. People ambled in and out for two hours, and as “Rivers” is being used in many of the UN 101 classes this semester, numerous students were periodically arriving at the W room wanting to get their copy signed by the author. Some also asked him questions about the book that may not have been covered in their classes.

Overall, the event was a massive success. Smith was introduced and spoke a few words of thanks for all of the people who came to encourage him. He reveled in the fact that his community had supported him so fully, from the W itself to the Arts Council and everyone in between.

Even if someone didn’t get to go to the event, Smith is still a professor at the W and the bookstore is still selling his book throughout the semester. So if anyone wants a copy and wants it signed, he or she still has time!
