2017 Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium provides excitement and learning for all

Mississippi University for Women hosted its annual fundraiser, the Welty Gala, on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. as a featured event of the Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium.
This year, the gala was bigger and better than ever. There were several changes to the Gala this year, particularly the decision to move the location from the W to the Trotter Convention Center. The W’s Jazz Ensemble was also featured.

Mississippi University for Women opened a coffee shop on campus for students and faculty this semester.
Common Grounds, a shop that serves Starbucks coffee, opened successfully on Aug. 14.
“When we first opened it was smooth sailing,” said Adell Saffore, manager of Coffee Grounds. “But the very first week of business, our truck [that had some of our supplies] got stuck in Houston, Texas, because of the hurricane.”
Man arrested for indecent exposure, profanity on W campus

The MUW Police Department arrested a man for indecent exposure after receiving reports of someone flashing students on campus.
Laterrence Stewart, 29, is charged with giving false information to police, indecent exposure and public profanity. Witnesses identified Stewart on March 29 after reports of an individual approaching students on campus and asking for cigarettes, making lewd comments and exposing himself.
W hosts first ever “Music by Women” festival on campus

The W’s music department hosted “Music by Women” in the Connie Sills Kossen Auditorium to pay tribute to women in the music industry everywhere.
“This is the inaugural festival that is dedicated to highlighting the contribution to women composers throughout history to classical music,” said Dr. Julia Mortyakova, artistic director of the festival and chair of the Department of Music.
Ghosts and Legends tour returns to Columbus

The Columbus Arts Council, Columbus Community Theatre, MUW Center for Research and Public Policy and Columbus Cultural Heritage Foundation recently presented a haunted tour of Columbus.
Ghosts and Legends included a bus tour to several historic and “haunted” stops around Columbus. Attendees met at the Tennessee Welcome Center and had their choice of departure times being 6:30, 7, 8 or 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12. Each tour lasted around 75 minutes.
City lights up for holidays

The city of Columbus is presenting a series of events from Nov. 28 to Dec. 13 to ring in the holiday season.
The festivities start on Nov. 28 with the lighting of the Columbus Christmas tree at the east end of the pedestrian bridge on the Riverwalk. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with caroling from the Columbus Choral Society. Columbus Mayor Robert E. Smith Sr., will light the magnolia Christmas tree at 6:15 p.m.
Local musicians pay tribute to Merle Haggard

Columbus Arts Council hosted “Silver Wings: A Tribute to Merle Haggard” on Oct. 7 at Rosenzwieg Arts Center.
The tribute concert featured covers of some of Haggard’s most famous hits, including "Silver Wings," "Fighting Side of Me" and "Mama Tried." Jerry Carnatham, lead singer and W alum, was inspired to put together a tribute after Haggard’s death in April of this year.
W celebrates Women's Health Awareness Week

MUW’s Department of Health and Kinesiology hosted three events Oct.4-6 to commemorate Women’s Health Awareness Week and encourage women to live healthier lives.
The events focused on sexual health, heart health and metabolism. Speakers for the events included Dr. Kathrynmay Malone, Dr. Caroline Payne-Purvis, Dr. Hector Dox and Melissa Parsons.
